CFITrainer.Net Podcast

The IAAI and CFITrainer.Net present these podcasts with a focus on issues relating to fire investigation. With expertise from around the world, the International Association of Arson Investigators produces these podcasts to bring more information and electronic media to fire investigators looking for training, education and general information about fire investigation. Topics include recent technologies, issues in the news, training opportunities, changes in laws and standards and any other topic that might be of interest to a fire investigator or industry professional affected by fire. Information is presented using a combination of original stories and interviews with scientists, leaders in fire investigation from the fire service and the law enforcement community.

Welcome to the CFITrainer.net podcast. Time flies, another year's gone by and we're grateful for the support we get from so many organizations. In this podcast, we're doing a quick year in review and taking a look at what's planned for 2022. It's a good opportunity for you to catch up on what you might have missed and to find out what's coming.

Our biggest story this year at CFITrainer.net was the addition of live classes and events to our training programs. Moving the IAAI's virtual class delivery that began during the COVID-19 pandemic to CFITrainer.net's platform with Zoom integration enabled us to add certificate testing, post event resources, class replays, and transcript listing. You'll see current live classes and events listed as Register Now Items in the available programs list. Click that to view the program synopsis and register through the firearson.com portal. When it's time to attend the class, you log onto CFITrainer.net, click the class item it'll be in the Available Programs and then click "Launch Live Program." After the class, you can take the skills challenge test to earn your certificate of completion, access a post event activities page of resources and replay the class. The class is on automatically added to your CFITrainer.net transcript. Now all your online training from the IAAI, whether it's prerecorded modules, live classes and events, or in person classes, well they're all listed on your transcript as long as you've tested and earned the certificate of completion. For full details on live classes and events, there's a link for more information on this podcast page here on CFITrainer.net.

For our online training modules launched in 2021, our theme was new technologies. We released five new modules this past year, Lithium-Ion Battery Fires, Photovoltaic Cells and Systems, Alternative Fuel Vehicles, and two covering electric and hybrid vehicles. Watching these new modules is a terrific way to improve your foundational knowledge of how these technologies work, their associated safety hazards and the fire investigation challenges they pose. Check out this podcast page on CFITrainer.net for links to all of the modules.

The National Fire Protection Association published a new edition of NFPA 1033 this year. We updated CFITrainer.net's filters to be consistent with the 2022 edition. One of the major changes in the new edition was moving the 1.3.7 topics to section 4.1.7 and Annex B. CFITrainer.net's Available Program's filter now uses 4.1.7 Topics. CFITrainer.net filters are an excellent way to see the slice of online modules that match what you're looking for. So let's say you want see all of the CFITrainer.net modules about fire chemistry. In Available Programs, click Filters, then click the NFPA 4.1.7 Topic to expand out the filter choices. From that list, you can choose "4.1.7 (1) (A) Fire Chemistry". The program list will filter to show you only the programs that talk about fire chemistry. We have 77 modules as of today so the filters can really be helpful in picking out exactly what matches your interest or needs. You'll learn more about the changes in 1033 and the changes in NFPA 921's new edition in an online module coming out in 2022.

Following along with revisions to NFPA standards and new modules we released this year. We also revised our correlations documents that list which CFITrainer.net module's address job performance requirements in NFPA standards related to fire investigation. We have correlations for NFPA 1001, 1021, 1033 and 1037. For each JPR relevant to fire investigation we list the CFITrainer.net modules that touch on that JPR. These correlations are designed to help you plan your professional development by finding training that fulfills JPR's in the standards relevant to your job. We have a link to the resources page with the correlations documents on this podcast page.

To tie together the core fire investigation modules on CFITrainer.net we created two multi-program certificates. The CFITrainer.net certificate Principles of Fire Investigation requires 20 online training modules covering the major knowledge skills fire investigators need. It's an excellent way to prepare for more intensive in-person classes like the IAAI's 40-hour Fundamentals of Fire Investigation Class. You can also use the certificate to refresh or sharpen your skills. The CFITrainer.net certificate Fire Investigation for Fire Officers gathers eight modules covering skills fire officers need to make an initial fire cause and origin assessment. The certificate also has two optional concentrations for additional knowledge in youth-set fires and motor vehicle fires. Links to both certificates are on this podcast page.

In 2021, we added two new features to CFITrainer.net transcripts. You can now filter your transcript entries by date range. This is helpful if you need to submit a transcript for a requirement of training completed in a specific timeframe. You can also send an official transcript that goes directly from CFITrainer in the IAAI to the email address of a person you specify. Official transcripts provide proof of training completed. We also debuted many new Fire Investigative Profiles. These short profiles offer a glimpse into the careers of working fire investigators across the United States. It's a great way to see the diversity of this profession and the different career paths within it.

Finally, you can take a look at a live class we gave earlier this year called Getting the Most Out of CFITrainer.Net. We've made the recorded version of the class freely available on CFITrainer.net and YouTube. You'll find a number of tips and tricks for putting CFITrainer.net's many features to work for you. Check out this podcast page for a link to the video.

We have a lot in store for 2022, we'll be back to our regular monthly podcast. We've got online training modules coming in fire effects, fire scene safety, the changes in the new additions of NFPA 1033 and 921, and a few more topics to be named shortly. We'll have several new live classes available for registration after the New Year. We also have a new professional development tool in the works. Beyond that, we're also discussing adding and expanding capabilities on CFITrainer.net that will give you even more control over your training. In light of NFPA 1033's requirements that fire investigators stay current and also complete 40 hours of continuing education every five years. Keeping on top of your professional development is critical. CFITrainer is here to help you do that.

Now some news from the IAAI, the International Training Conference or better known as the IAAI ITC is being held in Jacksonville, Florida, April 10th, through the 15th. In one week, you can fulfill all your annual needs to keep current with NFPA 1033. You can learn more at iaaiitc.com. We even have an email template that you can send to your superiors letting them know of the opportunity and its value to every department or organization that provides fire investigation services. You can get that email template, learn about the courses and activities and register again at iaaiitc.com. We look forward to seeing you there.

This podcast and CFITrainer.net are made possible by funding from the Fire Prevention and Safety Grant from the assistance to Firefighters Grant Program administered by FEMA and the U.S. Department Of Homeland Security, support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and voluntary online donations from CFITrainer.net users and podcast listeners.

Thanks for joining us today on the podcast. We wish you the best during the holidays and a fulfilling 2022. Stay safe. We'll see you in the New Year. For the IAAI and CFITrainer.net I'm Rod Ammon.
