Program Abstract
The acquittal of Cyrus Casby on homicide charges had the investigative team shaking their heads in disbelief. With copious physical evidence (including DNA), credible eyewitness testimony, and the suspect’s confession, how had the jury decided Cyrus Casby was not guilty of murdering four members of the Carto Family, including his toddler daughter? The investigators asked themselves: What did we do wrong? What more could we have done? They put this question to the ATF. Instead of just identifying what went wrong, the ATF realized that there might be a second chance to prosecute Mr. Casby. This module recounts the federal investigation, subsequent trial, and lessons learned.
