Disclaimer- NFPA and other resource editions cited within the CFITrainer.Net site were current as of the release of the respective modules. The field of fire investigation and its guiding documents are constantly evolving and it is incumbent upon the fire investigator to remain up to date with the guidance in the current editions of the documents referenced in all modules on CFITrainer.Net, regardless of which edition was used in the writing of the module.
Program Abstract

Physical testing, mathematical modeling, computer modeling, and scientific research are origin and cause hypothesis testing tools available to the fire investigator. But the complexities of when to conduct these types of tests, what tests to conduct, who should conduct the test, how to conduct the test, and how to ensure test data is valid for the case it is applied to can make investigators reluctant to use these tools. This module de-mystifies these decisions and provides concrete steps to better equip the investigator to consider using these types of testing methods as part of their origin and cause hypothesis testing.

This module discusses the scientific method as applied to origin and cause. NFPA 921 includes guidance on how to apply the scientific method to other topics, including fire pattern analysis and safety. Applications of the scientific method to topics other than fire and/or explosion origin and cause are not included in this module.

CFITrainer.Net recommends taking this module after the “Origin & Cause Hypothesis Testing Fundamentals” module. Cognitive testing for hypothesis evaluation is covered in this Fundamentals module.
