Hello and welcome to this special edition of IAAI’s CFITrainer.Net Podcast. In this special edition, we talk about IAAI’s Annual Training Conference and National Arson Awareness Week, which are both happening the first week in May.

There is still time to register for the 2011 IAAI Annual Training Conference, which runs from Sunday, May 1 through Friday, May 6. This conference is the premier training opportunity for fire investigators and associated professionals. Attendees take classes from well-respected instructors and practitioners, network with colleagues from across the country, and enjoy what Las Vegas has in its many attractions. Online registration is simple and quick. A link to online registration is provided on this podcast’s page. Please note that Thursday, April 28 is the last day to take advantage of the IAAI Special Conference rate at the host hotel, the Flamingo Las Vegas. Host hotel information, as well as conference general information, is available on iaaiatc.com.

This year the ATC 2011 coincides with National Arson Awareness Week, which is May 1-7, 2011. National Arson Awareness Week is a project of the United States Fire Administration in cooperation with strategic partners, including IAAI, ATF, USAonWatch, the National Association of State Fire Marshals, the National Volunteer Fire Council, and ICAC. This year’s theme is "Working Together to Extinguish Serial Arson." Serial and spree arson incidents are more common than we may realize and some have become quite well known, including John Orr in California, Paul Keller in Seattle, and even David Berkowitz, the "Son of Sam" killer, who started his crime career as a serial arsonist. Often times, a serial or spree arsonist only comes to light after one of his/her fires turns tragic. We have seen how serial and spree arsonists can terrorize a community, cause significant property damage, and take lives.

Using the team concept to quickly identify serial and spree arson incidents has proven to be an effective way to address the problem. Because these linked incidents can be many in number and difficult to investigate, tracking and capturing the serial or spree arsonist can demand significant manpower and budget commitments. When agencies and investigators work together by sharing information and resources, success rates can be raised while limited assets are effectively allocated.

During National Arson Awareness Week, take some time to reflect on your role in preventing and investigating arson fires. On this podcast’s page, a letter from David Nichols, President of IAAI, provides more information about serial and spree arsons, as well as self-assessment questions you can ask to determine where you might improve your department’s arson investigation efforts.

That concludes this IAAI CFITrainer.Net podcast. Please take a moment to explore the links on this podcast’s page -- they provide more detail on 2011 IAAI ATC, National Arson Awareness Week, and effective investigation of serial and spree arsons. We’ll see you again next month.
