It all began at the fire academy Revinge, Sweden, in 2019, between the Danish National Police (NKC) and the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science at the University of Dundee in Scotland. We undertook a pilot study to explore the use of Virtual Reality as a tool. The scenes that we captured enabled us to build a robust and comprehensive on-line training experience for European fire investigators in 2020 when in person training was not possible. In total, 78 participants from 24 nations, worked through 6 case studies submitting 115 reports. In 2021, NKC and Dundee are again joining forces, this time to develop a series of training scenarios, where fire scenes were digitally documented before a simulated crime, after the crime and after a fire at the scene. In this case an important factor was to explore and understand the accuracy and of the Virtual Reality simulation, providing confidence of its use as a deployable tool for training and competency testing. The audience will see examples from Udgård that can be used for broad-scale field experts/practitioners, and students. They will also get lessons learned and best practice.
