Safety Stand Down: Ready to Respond Week, June 17-23, 2007

The International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) is partnering with the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), the Volunteer and Combination Officers Section (VCOS) of the IAFC, and additional partners to endorse the third International Fire and EMS Safety Stand Down: “Ready to Respond” week from June 17-23, 2007. The Safety Stand Down: “Ready to Respond” week is encouraging all fire fighters, emergency medical technicians and fire marshals to prepare and practice emergency training methods. This year’s Safety Stand Down has been expanded from one day to one week to offer fire departments more flexibility in getting involved.

“The IAAI is proud to support the Safety Stand Down week sponsored by the IAFC. Fire investigators and fire marshals must be extremely vigilant while conducting investigations in order to protect themselves and fellow investigators,” said International Association of Arson Investigator’s Director of Governmental Relations, Steve Austin. “The program provided for the Safety Stand Down by the IAAI gives common-sense safety information to protect all those tasked with determining the origin and cause.”

The drill prepared by CFITrainer.net and the IAAI for the Safety Stand Down week focuses on the potential hazards that are faced by fire marshals and investigators when conducting fire investigations. This suggested drill, coupled with the Fire Investigator Scene Safety module on CFITrainer.net, is designed to increase fire investigators knowledge and awareness of key safety issues related to their job.

In addition to this drill, the 2007 IAFC Safety Stand Down Resource Page has other materials to support the Stand Down including a detailed schedule of events, lessons learned, safety reports, links to fire fighter health and wellness programs and a chief’s guide to planning and outreach. These materials are designed to aid fire departments in the development of programs to reduce firefighter deaths and injuries. According to the IAFC, “it is estimated that up to 10,000 fire departments participated in last year’s Safety Stand Down and it is expected that the number will increase as fire departments realize the importance of this week-long event.”
