The multifaceted nature of fire scenes and fire investigations can often benefit from the involvement of separate experts with backgrounds in origin and cause investigation and electrical engineering from the outset of an engagement. Oftentimes, an expert in origin and cause determination performs a scene inspection to locate the area or areas of a fire’s origin and collects relevant artifacts that may provide insight into its cause for later analysis by an electrical engineer. An on-site electrical engineering expert can provide electrical data critical in developing working hypotheses and guide the ongoing scene processing and data collection. The electrical engineering expert can continue to provide background information, calculations, and analysis to the origin and cause expert while working through the complete fire investigation. Dr. Scott Wright Expertise includes investigation of fires caused by electrical failures and investigation of electrical/electronic products and components that are alleged to have caused fires including structure, wildland, vehicle, and ship fires. He has investigated numerous incidents involving electrocutions and electric shocks and lectures on the topics at Stanford University. He has extensive electrical experience in power generation, rotating electric machines, solar power generation, inverters, industrial electronic equipment, electrical distribution equipment, and switchgear and is familiar with the obligations and standards in place concerning them. Keith Parker Professional fire service career with the Marin County Fire Department 1980 to 2013: Starting from the ranks of Seasonal Firefighter through Battalion Chief. Included five years as the Prevention Bureau Chief/Fire Marshal, Returned to all risk field operations in 2001. Experiences include Type III Incident Commander, Type I Information Officer, Division-Group supervisor, and Strike Team Leader Engine.
